How to get abs… this is a question that is very common to get once people get comfortable with me.
“Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask you.. what are the best exercised for building my abs?”
Unfortunately the answer is not what people want to hear.
So… here are the 5 reasons why you’re working out but not building ab definition
First
You’re not creating a stimulus for your abs to grow. You need to make your abs grow. Most people will do crunches for days. Thousands of crunches! And because they get good at feeling they’re abs from doing the crunches, they think that’s doing something. The truth is that it IS doing something but it’s not doing what they want. It’s build incredible endurance in their ab muscles. But do they want abs like an endurance runner? NO!
You need to lift heavy weights that engage the core muscles. The abs main function is for bracing. So, if you want your abs to grow (which will make them be more pronounced) you need to make them work hard and be forced to adapt.
Second
You are doing WAY too many reps! You need to treat your abs like any other muscle group, and train them to create muscle growth (aka hypertrophy). Move slowly and do 8-15 reps to FAILURE! Crunches and sit-ups probably won’t get you where you want to go.
Third
You’re just not working out hard. Going through the motions isn’t going to cut it if you want to create change in anything. You need to force change. You need high intensity. You need to be reaching ab failure and trying to push past your failure point. It’s going to hurt! Get used to it. Love it!
Forth
You are training hard but not recovering. Half of the equation is rest and recovery. Your abs will look their best after a great night sleep. Yes if you’re sleeping really well, you will have the most fat burning and muscle building. You need to optimize your sleep to get the gains you want. It’s much more than working hard.
Fifth
You want results too soon. If you took the last 10 years getting out of shape… it’s going to take some time to get back into good shape. Stop creating short term goals and get into the goal for the long term.
If you take that approach you can virtually guarantee your success. Some things will work better for you than others, and with a long term approach you have the time to test things and make adjustments.
Be open to getting super ripped abs in the next 2-5 years, figuring out exactly what works for you, and then being able to get those super sexy abs back at any time in your life.
