Mountain Biking
Cross country style mountain biking (meaning you go up and down hills) is one of the best full body workouts that I’ve ever done!
You might be surprised how much upper body work you get when riding a good mountain bike trail. You have to push and pull with your whole body to get up those steep hills. And it will get your heart rate jacked!
Trail Running
The reason that I mention trail running and not road running is there is so much more variance in trail running. Your ankles and knees will get stronger, and have less overuse injuries than with road running.
Not to mention the more aggressive variance in terrain and elevation than roads are allowed will provide the constantly varied intensity needed for continued improvements.
Kids Playgrounds
Seriously though! Climbing around a kids playground is a fantastic way to increase upper body strength in a fun way.
You want to look for playgrounds with things to hang from and climb. Things like monkey bars, nets, and other monkey bar variations.
Rocks and Trees
The last thing that you need to have a complete fitness program is to be lifting heavy things a few times a week. And if you want to avoid a gym… finding a few heavy rocks or chunks of wood can be a great way to get your lifting in.
Lift these things like a deadlift. Or put them on your shoulder for some squats. Getting as creative as you can will yield many benefits to your body and health in the long run.
Routine
The best thing you can do is put together a varied routine 4-6 days a week. It could look something like this…
Monday – 1 hour of mountain biking
Tuesday – 30 mins of picking up rocks in the back yard (or park)
Wednesday – 30 mins of trail running
Thursday – rest
Friday – 30 mins of picking up and squatting rocks or logs in the back yard (or park)
Saturday – 1 hour of playing at the playground
