Look others in the eye (and if you can muster it… smile)
I hear parents telling their kids to do this, and it’s actually a great lesson! It can be improved by saying look people in the eye, and if it feels right, smile.
Drive safely
It’s clear (based on my travels) that you might not know what this means.
Give a large following distance (aka no tailgating). You don’t get places faster by tailgating.
Use you blinkers.
Let people into your lane when they have their blinker on.
Wave at an chance you get.
I fail at this one often, and am speaking to myself here a bit.
AND please note that I’m not saying to drive slowly. I’m saying drive smart! I LOVE driving a fast sports car, but will not drive fast and recklessly when others are around.
Think about your feelings, but also thinking about others feelings
All I’m saying here is consider what those around you are feeling. If you’re in the grocery store, the car, the airplane, everywhere.
What is the person taking your order at Starbucks feeling?
Exercise often, but don’t overthink it
The habit of daily movement is so much more important than crushing a workout, or running a marathon. These things are cool, but don’t crush a workout and stop, or run a marathon and stop.
Make it feel weird if you don’t exercise during each day.
Join The Get Better Project if you need to know what to do each day.
Get crystal clear on what’s important to you
If you have this figured out, high five, you are a rockstar!
Most people don’t, or haven’t thought about what’s important to them.
If that’s you… schedule coffee with yourself once a week where you go write down what’s important to you. This might feel weird at first, but it will get fun. And it usually won’t be crystal clear from the first time.
Once you feel like you have it all figured out, try creating a vision board. This is pictures, images, and drawings (if necessary) of what you want.
Lastly, take a look to see if your life is aligned with the things that are important to you. Change if you need to.
FYI if you study happiness, a lot of people are putting it off (or struggling through it) to get to a point where they “think” they’ll be happy.
An example is having a good job that makes a lot of money that you hate. But when you have enough money, or get to be CEO that will change. Research shows that this is false.
Have a daily gratitude practice
This is easy, fun, and so powerful! And it only needs to take about 2 mins.
I would highly recommend creating a reminder that pings you every morning and/or evening to do this. One that you must check off or it doesn’t go away.
Here’s what mine looks like, and what I’ve been doing for over 2 years (almost) everyday.
What am I grateful for?
What would make today awesome?
What is special about me? These are affirmations.
What awesome happened today? This one I answer after 8pm.
Sometimes the answers are the same over and over, and that’s fine. The cool thing is that these keep you feeling grateful and keep you aligned with what’s important to you everyday!
People are the most important
It could be family, friends, or both, or people you don’t know, it’s all the same. Tell people how you feel. Communicate even if it’s uncomfortable. And remember that people are more important than things, always.
Conclusion
I believe that if you can check all of these off your list, you’re probably living a fantastic life. But if you aren’t doing any of them… start with one or two, but keep this post as a reference to come back to until you’ve mastered them all. I’m still working on the driving safely thing. I do drive safely, but get pissed when others don’t, and devalue the lives of people around them (and themselves).
