We have just stared the 2019 CrossFit Games out in Madison Wisconsin. And this is the first year (in a long time) that we haven’t had a Regionals competition to qualify for the CrossFit Games.
Today I’m going to be talking about who I think will be crushing the 2019 CrossFit Games.
The Regionals-less Season
Every year since 2012 the CrossFit Regional’s we on my calendar as an event that I was going to try to compete at, and watch as much of them as possible.
And once they started to get really good at broadcasting the events, the Regional’s weekends provided many hours of entertainment.
This is one of the reasons it was so hard to believe that CrossFit would want to get rid of these fantastic events. But, that’s neither here nor there.
The Sanctionals
With the loss of the CrossFit Regionals events, the CrossFit Sanctionals became the focus for fans of the sport (including myself).
The Sanctionals were cool this year, but with some major hiccups in how the competitions were presented to the fans.
But with some patients you were able to follow the events and the top athletes.
Who are the people to watch at the 2019 CrossFit Games
After watching many hours of Sanctional events, listening to podcasts, and even interviewing some of the athletes competing this year (Scott Panchik), here are my athletes to watch at the Games!
The Guys
Matt Fraser
– Dubai CrossFit Championships – 1st
– Rogue Invitational – 1st
– 2019 CrossFit Open – 1st
I don’t think there’s anyone that can knock Matt Fraser off the top of the podium this year. That is, unless he does it to himself (injury, etc.). And even though the media is creating a bunch of hype around Patrick Vellner having a chance, I just don’t see that happening.
Cole Sager
– 6th in the 2019 CrossFit Open
– 3rd at Rogue Invitational
This guy is a fighter. There’s something in him that deep down wants to win. And you see a lot of really good athletes out there, but they don’t have that look in their eyes. That look that they’ll do whatever it takes.
In the past years Cole has been competitive, but with some holes in his game. If he’s been able to fill those holes, this could be a good year for him.
Patrick Vellner
– 1st at Wodapalooza
– 2nd at Rogue Invitational
– 30th in the 2019 CrossFit Open
Even though I don’t think there’s a chance of Pat knocking Matt Fraser off the top spot, I do think he’s right up there at the top. He’s just been so good at getting rid of his weaknesses. That’s not to say that others don’t try, but Pat’s body actually adapts and becomes good at his weaknesses. A great example is how he’s become one of the best strength athletes, but in the beginning that was a weakness. That’s not easy to do.
Travis Mayer
– 14th in the 2019 CrossFit Open
– 2nd at Wodapalooza
This year Travis has been on a war path like never before. This guy just keeps surprising me. I think that if Travis can bring the drive and intensity into the Games that we saw earlier in the Sanctional season, he will be top 5 at the Games.
The Girls
Tia Toomey
– 1st at Wodapalooza
– 1st Rogue Invitational
– 6th in the 2019 CrossFit open
If she has a good Games, she will probably win. I don’t think of Tia Toomey as dominate as Matt Fraser, but if she doesn’t make any mistakes I don’t see anyone beating her. She’s too well rounded.
Sara Sigmundsdottir
– 1st at Strength in Depth
– 2nd at Rogue Invitational
– 1st in the 2019 CrossFit Open
Everyone has been talking about how good she looked in her Sanctional events this year, and… I have to agree. If the Sara from Strength and Depth (https://strengthindepth.com/) shows up at the Games, she could give Tia a run for her money.
That being said, in the past you didn’t know what Sara you were going to get, so let’s see who shows up.
Sam Briggs
– 1st Dubai CrossFit Championships
– 1st at Australian CrossFit Championships
– 22nd in the 2019 CrossFit Open
With arguably the most dominate Sanctionals performance(s) of any female athlete, I think with the right programing Sam Briggs could be a top 3 athlete (even at 37 years old).
The other girls
I watched just as much of the girls competition as the guys, but I feel like the rest of the girls competition is a crapshoot. Jamie Green could be up there. There’s a lot of talk about Amanda Barnhart being the next great American. Dani Speegle could do some good things, but she really needs to clean up her form or she won’t be around for long.
Basically, I’m excited to watch the competition to see who shows up prepared and wanting to win more than the rest of the pack.
