InsideTracker is the next step in my optimization. Here’s my story…
Have you ever had a goal that you’ve dedicated your life to? I’m talking about optimizing everything that you can think of… diet/nutrition/supplementation, sleep/rest, exercise, stress, work, relationships…
I have.
Over the last 3 years I have completely optimized my life to be good at CrossFit, and get as close as possible to qualifying a team (3 guys/3 girls) for the CrossFit Regionals and possibly the CrossFit Games.
How I’m Optimizing…
- Sleeping 9+ hours every night.
- Eating 5-6 times a day.
- Tracking everything that I eat to make sure I’m getting enough protein, fats, and carbs.
- Meal prepping every Sunday afternoon for 2+ hours with my awesome girlfriend.
- Spending $100’s of dollars each month on supplements that will hopefully optimize health and increase performance.
- Drinking over 120 ounces of water everyday.
- Working out 2+ hours 5 days a week, and doing recovery swims and runs on “rest days”.
- Having my own company that allows me to have less stress, and work on my own schedule.
- Note: this can sometimes be more stress, but overall it’s definitely less.
- Hardly ever drinking alcohol. Maybe 3 times a year at weddings when you need that extra push to get onto the dance floor.
- Only hanging out with people that will understand my goals, and sometimes this means not hanging out with anyone.
- Visualizing every single meaningful workout over and over the night before.
- Using visualization techniques like CopyMe/IKKOS, and meditation.
Welcome to my life! Haha!
You’d think that all of this would give me the best chance of consistently improving and getting closer to my goals. But over the last couple of years my improvements haven’t been consistent, and it feels like I’ve been on a roller coaster of good training weeks, followed by terrible training weeks.
Some days I’ll be able to attack workouts, and put up great times. I can feel my body working well, and know exactly how far I can take it. Each breath is like an electric shock of new energy that I can harness to push through the next rep.
And other days it’s like the energy that I need is being sucked through a straw when I need a fire hose. The burning lactic acid builds up so bad that I can’t keep my muscle moving, and even though I’m taking huge panting breaths the oxygen doesn’t seem to be reaching my starving muscles. And eventually I must stop altogether.
There has to be a better way. Something that can level out this inconsistency, and bring consistent gains in performance.

Over the last year I’ve been seeing people like Cole Sager (top CrossFit athlete) post about how he’s been working with a company called InsideTracker to optimize the inside of his body. The hashtag that they commonly use is #blooddontlie “blood don’t lie”.
And after seeing Cole plus many other top level athletes post about their experience with InsideTracker (my stupid brain needed to see it like 20 times) I finally decided to look into it.
What is InsideTracker
InsideTracker is a company that sets you up to have your blood drawn at a local clinic. Your blood is then tested, and based on your personal profile/goals InsideTracker will give you recommendations on how to change your diet, supplementation, and lifestyle to improve your health, and reach your goals faster.
At first impression I was surprised to see that InsideTracker’s most comprehensive test was only $500. I’ve looked into, and done some testing in the past, but the biggest hurdle was always the high price tag. This has to do with the inability of our health insurance system to do much of anything right, but I won’t get into that today.
I was also pleasantly surprised to see how easy it was to get my blood test set up. InsideTracker tells you everything to do. Something that could feel very confusing was made quite simple and easy to navigate.
The next step for me is to head into the clinic to get my blood drawn. I’m very excited to see what they find, and get the recommendations from InsideTracker.
Once I have my full results I will write a follow up post on my experience. To be continued… Click here to read part 2 “My results are in! And they don’t look great…”

I’ve always told anyone that will listen… I can’t wait until there’s technology where your smart phone will give you daily alerts on how your body is doing internally, and you can adjust what you’re eating or supplementing with on the spot (instead of having to take something and hope that it’s helping). InsideTracker might be the closest thing to this reality…
