Well… this email is coming to you from the Seattle area (seems kinda boring after the last month :-)) where we have had a few really nice glimpses of summer!
If you haven’t experienced a PNW summer… it’s one of the best. Sometimes it comes in June and sometimes you have to wait until July.
I hope you’re starting to get some summer wherever you are!
Here’s what I found fun, interesting, or noteworthy this week…
MTB riding stats from trip –
Trip length: 31 Days
Riding days: 17
Miles ridden: 281
Feet descended: 146,215
Longest day: 24.78 miles
Most descent in one day: 13,629 feet (in 20.27 miles)
Average max heart rate: 161 bpm
Some interesting things about this…
- We rode the same amount of miles in 4 weeks as we usually ride in 3-4 months.
- We rode the same amount of descent in 4 weeks as we did in the last 6 months (almost exactly).
- An average max heart rate of over 160 beats per minute while riding downhill usually surprises people who don’t understand how hard and physical it is to ride challenging downhill trails as fast as you can. This heart rate is actually higher than on most of my climbs. Seems backwards but I hope that it makes you think. 🙂 Perceived exertion doesn’t always correlate to heart rate.
Our NEW YouTube video (dropped yesterday) –
We Drove 7 Hours for an Epic Ride at Chillan Bike Park – Nevados de Chillán
This area has the small ski town feel, and being summer… it feels completely dead! Which is actually fantastic, and very relaxing.
Not to mention it’s located on an active volcano! Whoa!
Extra mountain bike insurance that we buy –
Yes Mom we have insurance ;-)!
Through USA Cycling anyone can get a RIDE+ membership for $260/year which includes a $0 deductible $50,000 Spot insurance policy for biking accidents. That will work anywhere in the world!
Now if you live in a country that actually has a good medical system (like Canada or Europe) then you might not think this is all the interesting, and can ignore.
Fortunately we’ve only had to use this once, but it’s a pretty much zero questions asked access to medical funds if you get hurt on your bike.
***I realize that a lot of you aren’t bikers BUT there are programs like this for other sports that could make sense for you to look into, and so far… this insurance has proven to be very good for people that we know who have had biking injuries.

That’s what I have for you this week! We are off to ride bikes in Bellingham (as long as it doesn’t rain too much) and then off to Canada!
Cheers!
