Hangout buddies
So much of life comes back to who you are hanging around. Those you hang around will influence your thoughts and actions. And this is (perhaps) even more true during the holidays, when most people are making choices that arenāt helping their health or fitness.
Thatās not to say that you cannot be the leader of the group, but trust me when I say that it can be hard to be the leader all the time. And when it comes to families people can get caught up into routines and traditions that are very hard to break out of.
Remember that itās ok to do your own thing. Even if people make you feel bad for doing it. If you know that you donāt want to drink this holiday season, donāt drink, tell everyone youāre not drinking, and hold fast when you get made fun of. They are making fun of you because they donāt have the strength to do it.
Have a plan
This can be a workout plan, an eating plan, a sleep/wake plan, a relationship planā¦ itās simply a set of guidelines that you will do you best to follow. Without a plan you will never know if you are on or off course. Imagine setting off to sail a ship from the East Coast of the US to Europe, if you donāt have a route planned, who knows where youāll end up.
People tend to think things will happen as they will, or that there is some kind of unwritten plan for them. This could not be more untrue. Anything that is important for you need a plan!
Side note about plansā¦ I have a friend named Gabe that has had a plan is whole life, and heās followed it (almost) to a T.
I met Gabe in college and immediately liked him. He was confident, smart, kind, athletic, and ambitious as all get out! He was the guy that you wanted on your team, and we hit it off. It wasnāt long after I met Gabe that he told me his plan. He was going to get his pre PT degree, then go to PT school, then marry his girlfriend, take over his family PT business, have 2 kids, be a great dad, husband, friend, work until he was 55.5 years old and enjoy life.
There were a few times that Gabe wavered from his plan, but the key was (and has always been) that he had that plan. So when he wavered, things didnāt feel right, and he went back to his plan. Now Gabe is one of the most successful and happy people that I know.
How to find a plan
Some people (like Gabe) find it very easy to come up with their plan. This could be because their parents helped mold them, or they were influenced by some outside factor (like seeing Michael Jordan, a bodybuilder/CrossFitter, or a real estate investor) and wanting that.
The key is to dream big, then find someone that has had the success that you want and do what they have done.
Sometimes when you start going down the path of a successful person you will find that what it took for them to find success it not in line with what brings you happiness, and at that point you can either push through the hard times to hopefully find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, find a different person/mentor to see if they found success differently, or come up with a new dream/goal and start the process over. Any of these are 100% cool! The only thing that is not cool is giving up and not working towards a dream/goal. That is something you can never do!
If we are talking about looking and feeling better and more confidentā¦ you can simply join a program like The Get Better Project, or if you want to perform/look like another athleteā¦ join their program. These days you can easily pay a few bucks and join a great fitness, nutrition, movement program.
BUT if you want your results to come fasterā¦ make sure you have access to a coach in the program. Someone that will answer your questions, because you will have questions, and you should ASK THEM! If this is fitness or investing that we are talking aboutā¦ donāt try to recreate the wheel, things never ever go as planned, and having someone to help you out on your journey is crucial!
Mindset
You should be prepared for this to be hard. But remember that itās ok if it is hard, and that staying focused on your goals during the holidays is worth it being hard.
You can work on mindset by practicing it every day. I do this by journaling and writing down my goals every single day.
