I hope you’re having a rocking awesome week!!! I’ve been doing a snow dance since the last time we talked, and it only just started snowing (like an hour ago). There’s like half an inch in the forecast, but I’m hoping for 10” sneaky powder day. 🙂

This week in van life –
Sub Zero Temps – Jackson Hole – Steamboat Springs
We have NEVER been in temps this low (down to -15), and the van didn’t like it.
It’s also nice to be in Steamboat where we don’t have to move the van at all to get to our favorite places. Checkout the video to see what those are.

Thought that I’ve been pondering / super power –
Working hard to the point of getting uncomfortable
This came up because I’ve been talking with quite a few people about what they do when things get hard physically during workouts (or runs or races), and I’ve received a lot of responses about people NOT pushing themselves too hard because they don’t want to get injured. What the heck people?!
Then, I started watching people at this Steamboat gym that we’ve been going to, and the number of people that I’ve seen talking to their workout buddy while lifting weights was astounding! And they wonder why they still look and feel bad.
Here’s the thing… you cannot expect great physical results (or adaptation) without working hard.
Now, you definitely need to check all the boxes around moving really well. I am not condoning poor movement before adding intensity. But I cannot understand why someone wouldn’t pick up the groceries off the ground the same way they are trying to deadlift 1000 pounds, or not sit down on the toilet the same way they are trying to squat a bus.
I think every movement you make, you should try to move the best way you can. Why wouldn’t you? And if you don’t know how… hire someone. I do unlimited video review for just $40/month with a regular GBP membership, or you can hire a trainer for like $100/session, just MAKE sure they are good (most are not).
Getting back to working hard… you have to push beyond what you think you can do, or your mind tells you. If you can do 10 push-ups… the real magic happens at 12, and I bet you can do 12 but your mind is getting in the way (even with great form).
Last thing on this… Did you know that bodybuilders (at every level) take almost every workout set (after warm up) to complete muscular failure? They sure do! And they even come up with ways to trick their bodies to do more. Because it causes adaptations.
Here’s a great way of testing what I’m talking about in a very safe environment:
Push-ups on toes, knees, or against wall
8 sets of 10 reps
3 second negatives (lowering yourself for a FULL 3 seconds)
30 seconds between sets
So the down should be SLOW, and all other phases should just be controlled. Slowing down will really teach you if you’re working hard. It will hurt! And it should! #getbetter
