In this episode you’ll learn about how I’m… Working through setbacks (injury, jobs, sickness, etc.)
There are any number of things that can set you back in your fitness and health lives. But you shouldn’t let anything actually stop you! Here’s how I deal with working through setbacks that life throws at me.
And you can too!
Injuries suck, but having had a LOT of injuries over my life (they are just a part of sports and movement), I know how to capitalize on injuries to make the most of them.
Find things that you CAN do, and avoid thinking about the things you can’t.
For example… if you can’t deadlift, see if you can squat, or bench, or do thrusters. You have to try a bunch of thing to see what you CAN DO. Sometimes it will surprise you.
I remember when I hurt my back and could hardly get out of bed. But I was able to do Smith Machine squats without any pain. So, I got really good at those while my back was healing.
The worst thing you can do is stop moving. Find things that you can do.
Jobs can be a huge pain in the butt for a workout routine :-). Most people place the importance of their jobs above their own heath, and that’s just CRAZY!!! Why would you ever think that’s a good idea?
Here’s how you can have your job cake and eat it too…
Work in small sessions at work, home, or other. I just got done doing banded rows in the living room. Put some bands in your car, office, or living room. And if you only have 5 mins… USE IT!!!
The habit is the most important part of this all.
Keep the habit strong, even if you only have 5 mins.
Make activity a family affair. And if you can’t… just communicate your priorities upfront. “I want to be healthy so I can give more of myself to you”.
This one is all about communication.
For a long time Emily and I were on different pages with this. I alway thought she wanted to workout with me, but she doesn’t need to workout as much as I do. I need it for sanity. So, once we figured out that I should just workout and not wait for her, it cleared up a lot of potential miscommunications.
You can think that you can’t workout with kids, but I’ve seen too many people make it happen. Even if you have a screaming baby that will not let you put him/her down, you can get really good at baby squats and lunges. I’ve seen it done. Get really good at baby squats or lunges.
You can follow the hashtag #crossfitkids on Instagram to get some good ideas.
If you’re hit with a really bad illness, find people that have fought it, and figure out what they did. It’s so easy to find others that have been where you are. Just search the Googles! Reach out and find a mentor.
If you don’t like what your doctor tells you, get other opinions. You should always question things, always! Ask why!
