Progenex is crushing it. They released Progenex Force, a solid pre-workout supplement, and now Progenex Cocoon, a nighttime recovery supplement.
A nighttime recovery supplement might seem a little strange to you, but the truth is, you can beat your body down (day after day) in the gym, but all of your improvement comes during the “recovery” phase. And you get the majority of your recover when you’re sleeping.
I remember back in my bodybuilding days it was common for bodybuilders to wake up in the middle of the night to have a protein shake or eat some food. I would make a shake, and put it in the fridge, so that when I woke up in the middle of the night I could easily stumble into the kitchen and consume it. The only problem was, remembering that I had the shake in the fridge when (and if) I woke up in the middle of the night. Haha! It didn’t happen very often for me.
What I really needed was a product like Progenex Cocoon.
What is in Progenex Cocoon?
Progenex Cocoon has slow digesting proteins (casein) that will take their time getting to your muscles. What this means is, you won’t have to take that protein shake in the middle of the night. The Progenex Cocoon will be feeding your muscles on a slow drip while you’re sleeping.
The other interesting ingredient in the Progenex Cocoon is Metamorphogen, or you might have heard of it as tryptophan. We hear about tryptophan every Thanksgiving because it’s present in turkey, and responsible for that sleepy feeling after we all indulge in our huge dinners. Progenex Cocoon has added this to help you fall asleep faster, and sleep deeper.
Ok, ok, so I’ve told you all about what Progenex Cocoon is, but the real question is…. How does this stuff work… Right?
How does Progenex Cocoon work?
First things first. Consumption. This first time I consumed Progenex Cocoon, I just tossed two scoops into a glass of water, mixed it the best I could, and started drinking. This probably sounds like a solid plan to you… It did to me as well. But I was wrong. Sad face.
The flavor is Silk Chocolate, but as far as I could tell it was DARK Chocolate. Like the dark chocolate that is so dark that it’s not enjoyable. Haha! It was also very chunky. Meaning it didn’t mix well at all. But I could really care less about taste, if the product works. So I slurped it down.
What I failed to realize on my first consumption was that Progenex Cocoon is intended to be consumed with HOT water. That’s what I get for skipping over the directions. I mean, I read the directions, but somehow missed the part (or ignored) that says “12oz of hot* water.” What this means is that you can completely disregard my previous “cold water” experience with Progenex Cocoon. When mixed with hot water, it’s delicious! My system is to boil some water, pour it into a coffee traveler, mix in the Cocoon, add 3 ice cubes, and consume. I add the ice cubes because I don’t like mine super hot, and I don’t like to wait for it to cool down. I’m high maintenance, I know. So with hot water, you get a frothy, creamy, dark chocolatey taste that I really enjoy, and look forward to.
Onto Performance. The Metamorphogen (tryptophan) really works! I’m the kind of sleeper that sleeps hard once asleep, but sometimes falling asleep can be a process. Every time that I’ve consumed Progenex Cocoon, I’ve been sleeping within about 10 minutes. It doesn’t knock you out, but it gives you a gentle feeling of tiredness. And for me that puts my mind in a restful state.
As with any protein supplement, it’s hard to mark a direct correlation with feeling more recovered, and improving performance. The only time that I’ve really “felt” a difference from a protein supplement was when I took Progenex Recovery for the first time while I was training for an Ironman. I actually felt more energized for my second workout of the day when I took Progenex Recovery, and in contrast, I felt less energized when I took my bargain brand of protein. That’s when I became hooked on Progenex products, and still feel that they are the best for performance. So, that being said, I haven’t “felt” a difference when taking Progenex Cocoon (other than sleeping better). But… I do track my performance, and over the last 30 days I have set personal records (PRs) on my snatch (207#), back squat (405#), clean and jerk (272#), and bench press (295#). These are all lifts that I don’t PR regularly. What that means to me… is that even though I may not be “feeling” the difference that is something happening that’s making me stronger, and Progenex Cocoon has had a hand in that.
My conclusion is… if you’re a performance athlete that wants to make sure you’re recovered, and getting every bit out of your body (aka the machine), you need to get on the nighttime recovery bandwagon, and I recommend Progenex Cocoon as a great way to do so.
