Apart from having a great workout at the Omaha 24 Hour Fitness, and getting stuck in an epic Denver rain/hail storm, this was probably our least exciting day. The 4th of July in Omaha was very gray and gloomy, which worked out perfect for sleeping in and getting some recovery from our adventures. Abby again came though huge with something that she calls a “breakfast pizza”. This thing is crazy! If you have congestive heart failure in your family you should probably steer clear!
The pizza crust is made with a whole roll of refrigerator biscuits. Take the biscuits and smash them together until they become one. Then make scrambled eggs with spices and sausage in a separate pan. Once the eggs are ready, add gravy on top of the biscuit crust (as the sauce), put the cooked eggs on top of the gravy, add cheddar cheese to the top of the eggs, and then bake until the biscuits are cooked. From there, take your heart meds and go to work! Apart from being able to kill people on the spot, it was very tasty! This is a great cheat day gut bomb!
After letting the breakfast pizza digest for a few hours I drove to the local 24 Hour Fitness where I practiced barbell cleans. This was the first time that I’d attempted a clean in years and I thought that I might have injured my wrist, but it turned out to just be my body getting used to the front rack position.
The next phase in our journey was a long drive to Denver, Colorado to attend one of Denver’s 4th of July fireworks shows. We had been checking the weather reports for Denver and they read “STORM,” (and they actually got it right)! After a long day of driving, we were only a few miles from Denver when the dark rain clouds engulfed the sky. At that point driving became almost impossible. When it rains in Denver you can’t see the lines on the freeways, so everyone just follows the person ahead of them. Now take that follow-the-leader driving and combine it with torrential rain (and mixed hail), and 25 miles per hour was the fastest we could safely drive. We drove around Denver for about an hour before we realized that they had canceled the fireworks shows and were planning on trying again on the 5th of July (good thing we celebrated on the 3rd! :-)) Because we were only in Denver for the fireworks show, we continued on to Colorado Springs to stay with our Rock Star host, Kellen Knight!
This day started as fun and relaxing and ended with the bang of the lightening in Denver. What a first impression Denver provided! Next up: Pike’s Peak! Stay tuned!
