Every airport is going to give you a different selection of foods to choose from so anytime I can get some real world examples that you can relate to I’m going to post them. Today was one of those travel days when I didn’t get much time to grab food before traveling. I had a bag of nuts, but that was about it. This meant that I was going to have the chore of finding healthy food at the airport to keep my eating in line.
I was able to arrive a little early for my flight so I walked to the information desk at the Phoenix airport and asked what was around. When I do this I’m looking for sandwich places and Mexican restaurants. What I found was a Starbucks and a Mexican fast food restaurant. Starbucks actually has some pretty healthy foods to choose from. I don’t love eating breads, but they have some good whole wheat choices for when you’re in a pinch. The turkey bacon breakfast sandwich is good and so are the cold sandwiches on whole wheat bread. You can combat the negative glycemic impact of the breads by eating a few nuts before consuming the breads. The Mexican restaurants are usually good because you can get burritos without the tortilla and rice. It basically ends up being a meat and bean salad. You should really avoid the tortilla and rice because they’ll jack up your blood sugar with their high glycemic index and promote fat storage.
My first stop was Starbucks for a turkey sandwich on whole wheat. I ate some nuts before eating the sandwich and then proceeded to the Mexican restaurant where I got a burrito without tortilla or rice in a bowl. Ordering this special wasn’t any problem at all and the employee acted like it was a normal request. NEVER be scared to ask for something that will keep you healthy! These restaurants are literally killing people by telling them that things are healthy when they’re not. Sooner rather than later people will start to catch on and the restaurants will start to change. Most airports will have these type of restaurants available. Just make sure that you scope things out. You don’t want to get caught at your gate and realize the all the good food was on the other side of the security checkpoint. 🙂
