Today was a great example of how with a little work you can stick with your CrossFit Ironman Training while at a conference or any all day event. My day started by getting up 30 minutes early to do 15 mins of hill climbs. The driveway of the house that I’m staying at is a very steep 0.09 mile hill which turned out perfect for hill repeats! I was able to roll myself out of bed and push up and down the hill/driveway about 8 times in 15 minutes.
I was attending my internet marketing conference at the Westin Hotel in downtown San Diego, CA and needed to get in a CrossFit workout. When lunch rolled around instead of running out to find the nearest deli like most of the attendies I went looking for the hotel gym, and how lucky am I… the gym door was propped open for me to stroll right in! I scoped out the area, programed a workout, set up my video camera and got started! The workout consisted of 5 rounds of 21 exercise ball GHD sit ups (I propped my feet under the lower pad of the leg extension machine), 14 one arm snatches (7 each) @40 DB’s, and 9 handstand pushups. It was a great workout that I push right through. I swear that this warm San Diego weather make the muscle function better :-)! Unfortunately when I went to shut off the video camera after finishing the workout I realized that it didn’t get turned on :-(. Because of this mishap I turned the video camera back on and did another round of the CrossFit workout so y’all could see what I was up to. *If I wasn’t able to get into the gym at the hotel I would have gone to a park down the street and done a bodyweight workout.
I should also mention that I brought a cooler to the conference full of cottage cheese (that I picked up from Costco the night earlier), apples, almonds, and Lara bars. For a post workout meal I found a coffee shop that carried low fat chocolate milk. Doing these little extra things wasn’t hard and I felt great all day long! I know what it usually feels like to sit in a conference for 11 hours and eat crappy food, and this was WAY better. I literally feel great and can’t wait for tomorrow!
If you find yourself in a similar situation just find your local grocery store and stock up on quality foods that will keep you energized for the whole conference. This means stay away from carbs that are going to spike your blood sugar. Stick to snacks like nuts and apples, and always eat them together! I killer carb spike will surely make it hard for you to keep your eyes open.
