Sunday October 11th I competed in the Hudson Highlands Greenway triathlon near Garrison NY. The course was a 6 mile kayak on the Hudson river, 25 mile bike ride, and an 8 mile trail run. I attempted this race having not kayaked for 9 years and not riden a bike for 6 years (never a road bike). Although my fitness level was able to take the abuse of the two unfamiliar legs I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. There’s nothing hard about kayaking or biking, but the technique needed to compete can only come with practice. Next year I plan to go back having kayaked at least 10 times, and riding my bike throught the year. The running portion was easly the hardest leg, and included a 1000 foot incline over about 4 miles (which turned out to be more of a walk then a run). The downhill was very fun, and fast with many gradual switchback that were easy to navigate. The end of the race was a little disapointing because most of the competitors finished and left without engaging in the festive post hangout like I’ve encountered with The North Face races. All and all I would recommend the race, and encourage you to checkout the website if you’re interested in a nice fall tri. www.hudsonhighlandstriathlon.org/
